Chapter Eighteen
Renee walked past her parents as they sat in the family room on her way to her bedroom with no intentions of stopping and exchanging words with them. Unfortunately for her, the feeling wasn’t mutual.
“Renee, honey,” her mother called.
Renee’s body sunk, her face lengthened, and her head tilted to the side. Still reeling from the unexpected and epic dud the night had turned into, the last thing she wanted to do was to participate in an enemy of the state style role-playing with her parents assuming the roles of CIA interrogators and her as a dissident double agent.
“Yes, mom,” she answered.
“Come and join us for a minute.”
Renee walked in with her can’t be bothered attitude masked by a welcoming mien.
“What’s up?” she inquired.
“Have a seat,” her father instructed.
She took a seat across from her parents, feeling like she had just taken the witness stand to testify in a trial she knew nothing about and pleading the Fifth wasn’t available to her. She was waiting for them to ask her to stand, raise her right hand, place her left hand on a bible, and swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. However, no mention of a sworn testimony was made during her mother’s ensuing words.
“Renee, your father and I have a few things we would like to discuss with you,” she said.
“Okay. Like what?”
“Renee, have you given any thought at all to returning to college?” her father asked.
“I have.”
“And?”
“Still thinking about it.”
That was not one of the possible answers on her father’s list of choices and he let Renee know by staring at her with a menacing expression, prompting her mother to act quickly to defuse the situation by changing the subject.
“Oh, Renee. Lamont called and asked about you,” she revealed.
Renee’s face grew even longer. She knew the addition of Lamont’s name to the mix could result in a few more lengths being added to a night that was already shaping up to be a long one. If only she could have replaced her mother with a glass or two of wine and her father with a mellowing selection of neo-soul, getting through a long night would have been a quiet storm, she thought. But as it stood, her parents were the ones in charge of the music. And there was nothing new or soulful about what they were playing.
“Now, there’s a young man with lineage to die for,” her father gushed.
“He does come from a long list of well-endowed men, doesn’t he?” her mother added.
Renee and her father stared quizzically at her mother, prompting her to revisit her statement.
“Intellectually and financially speaking, of course,” she clarified.
Renee looked into her parents’ eyes and saw wedding bells. She saw a father ready to give her away and a mother ready to plan the giveaway ceremony. The one thing she didn’t see, which was of utmost importance to her, was any indication that they were concerned about her feelings. It was a classic case of what parents wanted for their daughter with no regards for what daughter wanted for herself.
